Shaving rash, also known as razor burn, can appear up to 4 days after a bad shave. It is a very common condition in men but one which can be avoided. There are two possible causes.

If the rash appears immediately, it is probably down to lack of lubrication – i.e. your shaving gel/cream or the way you apply it. Try switching to our No. 2 Shave Now which helps to lifts the hair shafts and apply it with a brush.

If the rash takes a while to appear – up to a couple of days – it is probably down to poor technique (shaving too roughly, too close or against the grain) or because you have used a blunt razor. Invest in a fresh razor and go easy when you shave.

Likely problem: Sensitivity/allergy to shaving products
Solutions: Switch to gentler shaving products

If you have recently started using a new shaving gel or aftershave and you start suffering irritation on and around the shaved area, it is most likely to be an allergy to the product you are using.

Some shaving products and aftershaves contain ingredients which are quite harsh on your skin, like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Ethyl alcohol, Propylene glycol and artificial fragrances and colours. These can dry and irritate your skin. They may also contain other synthetic ingredients like Parabens that have been linked with health problems.

Problem: Razor bumps

Razor bumps, officially called pseudofolliculitis barbae, occur when hair starts to grow back after shaving but does not grow clear of the skin.

They are most common in people with curly hair, as the hairs naturally curl back into the skin rather than out of the follicle. There isn’t much you can do about having curly hair but reducing the frequency of shaving will help.

Men with sensitive skin who suffer from razor bumps may also benefit from using gentle shave products which do not contain drying alcohols or irritating artificial fragrances. Our No. 2 Shave Now and No. 3 Cool Down Moisturiser (after shave) are very mild as they contain neither.
